City of Troy Names New Police Chief - Gary O. Smith of Temple

The City of Troy is pleased to announce the hiring of recently retired Temple Police Chief Gary O. Smith as the City of Troy’s next police chief.  Current police chief Keith Reed announced his retirement last month.

Chief Smith comes to Troy with 38 years of diverse law enforcement experience with the Temple Police Department ranging from serving as a police dispatcher, police officer, training officer, patrol sergeant, SWAT Team Commander, Narcotics Unit Commander, Interim Chief of Police, Bureau Commander and as Chief of Police for just under 11 years.  Smith is a highly decorated law enforcement professional. He possesses a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Texas A&M University – Central Texas; An Associate of Arts and an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice Temple College; is a 2001 graduate of the FBI National Academy (166th Session) and is a graduate of the  Southwest Legal Foundation School of Police Supervision. Chief Smith also served five consecutive terms as president of the Central Texas Association of Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs.

“I am extremely excited at Chief Smith’s decision to lead the Troy Police Department,” said City Administrator Jeff Straub. “I have known Gary for many years and have never met a better person, law enforcement practitioner or police administrator. Troy is extremely fortunate to have Chief Smith coming to work as an integral member of our city staff.”  

Smith’s start date is will be April 12th.
